Room 113 A Marice Houston Mystery“Where’s my brother?” Brick demanded.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Brick,” Finetti replied.

“You don’t call me that! Where’s my brother? You tried to kill him once before….”

“Twice, you’ll recall.”

“I swear to God, you bitch. If he’s hurt or killed, I will do to you tenfold what happens to him. You won’t live to stand trial.”

“I want to call attention to the fact he’s threatening me,” she said sternly.

“I don’t hear a damn thing,” Alvin said. “Where’s his brother?”

China Finetti clamped he lips together.

“Lady, you damn well better talk, or I’m gonna let that boy go postal on your ass. There’s not a person here who would stop him. You might not ever tell him what he wants to know, and you do have the right to remain silent, but I guarantee, you’ll die screaming.”

Christian Book 1 of The Protectors Series by L. Ann Marie

Standard

16215950_1856934504575750_802884516_nFreaky kids abound! Paranormal is taking over the Princes and MC. Christian learns, loves and leads us into the new generation of Protectors. He does it the only way he knows, Badass.

What it’s about

Contemplating ending the constant barrage of death and destruction he’s seen his whole life brings Christian closer to his family. With Dakota’s help, Christian learns and uses his ancestors to control and manage his visions and abilities. Gaining peace for the first time in his life still, leaves him lonely. With all he’s been gifted, the ability to be touched is not among them. Dean thought using her ability to help the police find a killer was a good thing until she realized she was now the hunted. Losing her parents, in an explosion meant for her, she finds her way to the Princes and a man that not only protects and understands her but can hold her too. Christian has his work cut out for him. Showing Dean, the Princes and the MC what all in means isn’t easy when it’s wrapped around ‘freaky kid’ abilities. This is the story of Christian and Dean.

An excerpt from the story

Aiyana and Kaya are stopping the oil,” Teller says.

I nod smiling. “Did you get that or is Mucimi throwing it?”

He smiles proud. “I got it. I can watch her now.”

Since she’s the most focused reader we have that’s not surprising but I’m reminded we need to jump. I’ll do that before Mase and Devan get here. They need a way to get rid of the stress they’ll have by getting what everyone is doing.

Prez is watching us. “Aiyana isn’t at the reservation?” Fuck he’s got that fierce look in his eyes and he’s trying to block me.

“No Prez. Every time I try to get through what everyone is doing I’m sent out or you have something else pulling you away.”

“Outside.” He gets up and walks out but I know that calm isn’t really calm. He’s pissed. I follow him out and he sends Done in. “They ordered you lunch.” Done looks at me then throws Prez chin going into the room. Fuck he feels bad for me. It’s not like I had a fuckin chance to say anything.

He walks a couple of steps away then turns back. “Aiyana is off of the reservation but I’m not told. What the fuck are you thinking? She’s one of the most powerful readers we have.”

“We haven’t met yet for me to give you all I’ve done. Every time you ask I get through half of it. If I told you no when you sent me away you’d be pissed. I’m trying to catch up with MC protocol but you being pissed at me isn’t reasonable. I’ve done everything you asked when you’ve asked. When we meet I can tell you everything.”

“Now! Tell me now because I’ve got two of ours in fuckin God knows where and they’re being hunted. Tell me what the fuck made you think it was okay to send them any fuckin where.”

Jesus. He’s ready to hit me. “You telling me I head up Protectors made me think you meant it. I’m doing the job you gave me but I’m fighting everyone’s assumption that I’m still a fuck up. If you’d take a fuckin minute and listen I can explain.”

Fuck! He’s got his hand wrapped around my neck and I’m slammed against the wall before I can even register he moved. “I don’t give a fuck who’s family you are. I deserve more respect than I’ve seen out of you. If you can’t get it together then drop the fuckin cut now.”

What? I’ve given him respect. I’m trying to think of when I’ve been disrespectful to him then just give up. “You know what, take it. You’re not listening but threatening me. Take the fuckin cut and I’ll go back to the school with the kids. Put someone you trust to lead the Protectors because I’m not it and I’m fuckin tired of having to prove myself. I’m done.” He steps back shocked. As soon as his hand loosens I move. Walking down the hall I shrug the cut off and send it back to him. “I’ll be waiting in the locker room for the kids when they’re done. Hawk will stay with them.”

“Christian!”

I spin around pissed. “No Prez. It’s not so easy walking away! It hasn’t been a fuckin week in the job I didn’t ask for! I’ve done everything for both the MC and Princes since I was eleven fuckin years old! I’ve give everything I get up for both Clubs and I just started getting that level of commitment back from you. No one gave me shit before I got here. Now I’m told to move to a job that no one wants me in. I jumped when you told me too. I even asked how fuckin high but it’s not enough. Fuck that. I was happy where I was. I don’t need the Brothers or Officers bringing me down again. Take your doubt, your threats and the fuckin cut that I worked so hard to earn. I’m fuckin out.” When I turn Jessie and Taylor are standing here. I walk by and head to the locker room. Walking the tunnels will calm me. I throw to Brantley that I’m heading down and disable the sensors.

Jeremy is in my head but I stop him. ‘I need a fuckin minute. Nothing you say will change this right now. Give me that. I promise I’ll always help to keep Aubrey safe Brother. Just give me a fuckin minute.’ He quiets and I walk.

Since I was a kid I’ve gotten this shit and always given them everything. It was to the point that I was so disconnected I only saw my family after they escaped the shit that I saw. People would get pissed when I didn’t tell them shit so stopped showing for most of that too. Jacob was the only one that saw what was happening and tried to help. He didn’t get the process of the ancestors so what I gave him to hurt him but didn’t change anything for me. I stopped that too. He was younger than me and didn’t need my shit in his head. It would have been helpful if anyone took a fuckin minute to explain the ancestors to me, maybe how to use meditation or some training on the reading. I got help right at first but nothing after. When I came to the Compound I finally learned all that shit and have been training to grow my abilities. It hits me how fuckin long that took and I’m pissed all over again. I was a fuckin kid. I’ll make sure the kids get it and never walk with that depression or feelings of not being good enough to get the extra training. I’ll give it to them myself and fuck what the Brothers think. They haven’t done a fuckin thing but train me for two years. While I’m grateful and appreciate the ability to see and use the ancestors, I worked for a fuck of a lot longer for them than they ever did for me.

A peace settles over me as I walk back from the waterfront. The kids will be ready to go soon. I push everything from my head and shield so nothing comes in or goes out. I need some space from the Club and all the shit they throw. I wait at the door and see Done disable the sensors. I brace myself because Prez, Darren, Jessie and Dakota are waiting with the kids.

When the door opens Hawk moves to my side. I don’t know whether to say Brothers or not so I throw chin and reach for Nash. “Thanks we’re good if you can help them down the stairs.”

“We need some time with you Brother,” Dakota says.

I smile. “I wasn’t sure if I say, ‘Brothers’ so I just threw chin. I need to get them back. My job is them. I’ll do that to the best of my ability. No one had a problem with me when I did that job.”

Dakota is throwing and I shut him down. “I’m not doing this with them right here. They get more than you know. I’ll explain their new abilities when you come for that at the school. I’ll train them with the new they have so that keeps growing. Tomorrow I’ll teach them to jump so they have that to fall back to when it all gets to be too much. I won’t let them down and I’m good where I’m at with all this.”

Dakota nods and puts his hand up like he’s stopping them from saying anything. I don’t even look at Prez but take Honor’s hand and start walking. On the way, we talk about how Security works. I’m relieved when Done answers them. I keep my head clear but it’s not easy.

Cereal Authors

Having just wrapped up a very long serial “short story”, I have a moment to step back and decide what to blog on next here at Cereal Authors. Usually the topics involve writing, reading, or the like; however, I have been wanting to touch on something for a long time:  The support and respect of artists.

I’m not here to condemn or remonstrate anyone. But, many artists (writers are included in this as writing is an art) feel undervalued in society as a whole. I speak with many on a near daily basis and the general consensus is that the hours and effort we put into our work is not always valued the same as, say, a factory made item at a store. There is the common meme  of the coffee cup price compared to an ebook price. Which one took longer and was harder to make? Let’s guess.

AUTHOR QUIRKS AND WRITING HABITS

Standard

Cereal Authors

Most authors must have certain conditions in place in order to get their “WRITE” on. I know a few of these people.

Music

this is a subjective area as some love to listen to music to inspire them to write. Some like  rock, jazz or heavy metal. One author says the genre of music depends deeply on the  story shes writing.  Another writer stated that he picks out a soundtrack for each book as he writes.  Personally, I go for 70’s classic rock or 60’s and usually just listen to the radio as I type.

Others watch old movies or have television as a backdrop for their creativity.

Food and Drink

I am the one who snacks while I write.  I also need a beverage it’s usually coffee or cola. One person only drinks tea and another just has water for health reasons.

Apparel

WRITER’S ALL HAVE A THING, WHAT’S YOURS?

What's your 'thing?' What’s your ‘thing?’

Writer’s All Have A Thing, What’s Yours?

Like most writers, authors, I’ve been writing for years. But when I sit down to write a new piece, though I’ve evolved slightly over the years, my primary process has never changed. It’s kinda like my personal thing, my way of doing it, that kicks off the project and keeps me motivated and excited throughout the entire thing. It’s possible other writers use the same method, I don’t know, but it works for me.

So what is it? It starts with an idea, of course, but ends up with an entire book mapped out in my mind. Naturally, my head is often spinning, don’t get me wrong, I like it that way. This can lead to one sided conversations for those around me. Distractions during activities that I’m involved in, being there in person but not really being there…

Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates:
The Forgotten War That Changed American History
by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger.

I love American history: the good, the bad and the total ugly! Now I have found kids are not taught most of it. When my daughter was in high school she never learn, amount many historical facts, who Alexander Hamilton was and the great part he played in starting this nation, ty United States of America. She is now forty so I fear this lack of teaching American history, the Good, the BAD and the truth of both, have not be taught to a few generations.

Barbary States of North African practiced piracy for money. U.S. merchant ships were being boarded and raided by these pirates for personal gain. The young nation was near impoverish do to debts incurred from their war of independence for Great Britain. And up to…

Release Blitz for “Blazing Hearts” by Paul Nosach

Synopsis:

Dr. Sebastian Masters has lost his job from Eastbridge hospital, due to insubordination. But now he has come across the perfect woman, Dawn Turlo, who would give him another opportunity – another job offer and his own building with staff. The only catch is marriage.

But the problem lies deeper with Sebastian. He doesn’t know how to love someone, and turns to his long-time friend, Jaysen Stripe for help.

Meanwhile, Adam Ludsgarden, Sebastian’s nephew, has sunk deeper into depression due to the loss of his best friend Curtis Brown. Adam has secluded himself in his room and only comes out when necessary, and where Sebastian fails to try with him, Jaysen finds the proper words to sooth his pain.

But as Dawn starts to show her true colors and the way she feels, everything starts to spiral downward under the same roof. Can Sebastian hold everything together? Can he keep the peace? Can he keep his feelings in check after everything that had happened before with Jaysen? The suspicions grow intense, and finally Dawn Turlo is exposed to the truth. What Sebastian and Jaysen find out is astonishing.

Excerpt:

By the time the Pastor reached the room where Sebastian and Dawn were sitting, he knocked on the door. He saw before him: a man in mourning, and a woman who could have turned any other man to stone with a simple gaze. But they were together and that’s what mattered, at least in the Pastor’s eyes.

It’s a tragic thing that happened to you both,” the Pastor stated. “But Adam is with God now.”

What do you know what a tragic thing is?” Dawn whipped her head at stare straight into the man’s soul.

It bored into him. He felt it, too. It was that kind of stare which would bring death to anyone who crossed her path.

And what about this God you speak of?”

Dawn, do not speak of God like that,” Sebastian said, his eyes still puffy and red from crying.

Well,” she said, turning to face Sebastian, “I don’t believe in God.”

Do not talk about God that way,” Sebastian warned her. “He gave you life and there is a little life living inside you,” he was referring to the unborn baby.

The Pastor was appalled as Dawn got to her feet and crossed his path, meeting him eye-to-eye. She left the two men in the room, retreating to Sebastian’s room, which was hers also.

Sebastian apologized for his wife’s behaviour; for her short temper and disbelief.

That is your wife?” the Pastor was surprised. But it also explained her pregnancy. “I noticed she’s expecting! Congratulations,” he sat where Dawn had been. “Do you know what if it’s a boy or a girl?”

I do not want to know,” Sebastian told him, still brooding over the loss of Adam.

He started explaining to the man beside him what he already told Dawn: about his nightmares and how they haunted him – how they would stick in his mind, and that they were all about his loved ones. His dead loved ones.

As much as the Pastor tried to console Sebastian, it was not much use. As much as the Pastor tried to focus on Adam being in a better place than where they are, Sebastian dismissed the sympathy and thought that Dawn had been right. What if his wife was right? Is my wife right? Would God influence Adam to take his own life? It was an awful thing to think of, but there was no escaping it.

May God hold him in his hands,” Sebastian suddenly broke his silence, standing and taking the Pastor’s hand.

The Pastor was shocked to hear such a thing from someone who he was consoling. He saw a shine in Sebastian’s face. Something that was unusual. Sebastian’s eyes looked as blue as an ocean in a brochure, and his blonde hair held thin golden streams. So thin, that they could have been spun by any woman. God has blessed you, the Pastor thought. But that couldn’t be true. He had never seen such a sight before. And the only other time someone had looked as such, was after sexual intercourse: a beaming glow of pure light.

Let’s join Jaysen downstairs,” Sebastian said his voice void of all sorrow.

His tone was neither one of anger or of happiness. But his facial expression – The Pastor rose to his feet, letting his hand fall into Sebastian’s – if it was indeed Sebastian at all. Could this creature standing before him be God? After what he mentioned of God being all around us, it was a possibility that the Pastor couldn’t dismiss. They walked out into the hall, then down the stairs, still holding hands as if they had been best friends for the longest of time.

Sebastian and the Pastor gracefully took the stairs that they did not need to look down once. They didn’t falter once. When Jaysen looked up and saw both men descend the staircase, his eyes nearly popped out of his head. For one thing, he had never seen Sebastian in such a state. Usually he enjoyed his privacy, but the look on his face was unlike any Jaysen had seen. To Jaysen; Sebastian seemed to look mesmerized – his blue eyes unblinking. He wanted to say something, address Sebastian, but the Pastor shook his head, gesturing that he keep his mouth closed, for he couldn’t explain it, either.

Suddenly, Sebastian opened his mouth to speak when they reached Jaysen at the island, and said, “You are both my children, and I love you both. Dawn is my child also, but she sinned: a great sin and she will pay when the time is right.”

Both the Pastor and Jaysen couldn’t believe their ears, or their eyes. It was Sebastian’s body they saw, but the voice which came from his mouth, was that of tranquility. One thing Jaysen hadn’t heard from Sebastian in a very long time. But it wasn’t Jaysen so much as the Pastor who wanted to ask questions. After all, a man of God would jump at this chance, but his voice failed him.

Please, drink from the cup of my body.”

Jaysen had several cups already. In ignorance, Jaysen held up the glass to Sebastian – or what appeared to be Sebastian – and said, “Cheers!”

The Pastor, standing just to the right of Sebastian, dropped his jaw in surprise. Now he knew that Jaysen didn’t believe in God, but now that God – in essence? In spirit! – was standing under the same roof…No, the Pastor was just having wishful thinking.

Knowing what was going to come, and sensing the Pastor’s anxiousness, Sebastian turned to look at him, smiled and suddenly, out of nowhere, the facial expression had changed. Sebastian’s body had collapsed to the floor, and dropping his glass, Jaysen rushed to his friend’s side.

Help me,” he told the Pastor, but that wasn’t needed; for as soon as the words were spoken, Sebastian regained consciousness.

¿Qué?” Sebastian asked, receiving help from the two other men.

What do you remember?” Jaysen asked, seeming to be the obvious question that he would get after having a seizure. It was obvious that Sebastian was himself, since he was speaking Spanish again.

I do not know,” Sebastian said wearily, shaking his head, as if to clear stars before his eyes. “What happened?”

It doesn’t matter,” the Pastor said, looking Jaysen in the eye, giving the impression that he should keep his mouth shut.

Jaysen knew what the other man was thinking. He didn’t need to be told, as they helped Sebastian to the sofa. Jaysen offered him some water, but Sebastian declined and told them that he felt slightly energized, which made the other men helping him feel bewildered. He falls to the floor, yet feels rejuvenated? This was a queer revelation, which either the Pastor or Jaysen could understand. Was it theirs to comprehend? The Pastor had excused himself, thinking that he over-stayed his welcome.

About the Author

I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Ever since Junior high school, I have been writing (staying up at odd hours of the night). Only recently have I thought of music to push me. Every book I’ve written has a soundtrack, which are carefully selected songs (from popular artists to the mundane). I always start writing and give myself a deadline of four months to complete a novel. But as we all know, personal deadlines don’t always pan out in our favour.

My ideal night for writing:

1) A hot cup of tea.

2) A crisp, rainy evening.

3) The best music
