Stockings, Who Knew!

Every year I would receive a book and pen, loved those things and still do, sweets (candy), along with a special item that we had asked for as kids do today. One thing that never changed was what was put in our special stockings. We always have our stockings filled with fruit and sweets (candy). An apple, orange, and tangerine just about filled the entire thing, leaving a tad of room for a bag of sweets.

“Father Christmas left me an orange!” I said every year. When I was little my mum, Irene Yvonne Mulroy, used to say it was such a treat to receive such beautiful piece of fruit. Holding the fruit in my hand, though I did think it was quite ‘orange’ I wasn’t convinced it was beautiful, though I must admit I quite enjoyed the tangerines which honestly were a treat for us.

karens kwm logo (1).pngI wasn’t going to post a Christmas story of mine because I didn’t have one. I was going to post my Gus story written from the POV of a dog. I was surfing the net and found this gem.  So settle in with some hot cocoa and some Christmas cookies and enjoy this heartwarming story.

It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas — oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it — overspending…Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so forth. I reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way.

jd-Simple Things ad-downsized_large“We do say our prayers at night and the whole family goes to church on Sundays but we’ve come to think of Christmas as just a time to get gifts, kind of forgetting that it’s to remember Jesus and what HEsaid to do for others. You know, to help other people. People in situations where they don’t have anything at all. Some of them probably only think about having simple things that we have. And those are things that my family don’t give a thought to not having. Christmas is really a time to really think about all the people in need and to remember that those of us that have everything are lucky. I forgot that stuff,” Phoebe finished and looked over at Trisha who was sound asleep. ~

Memories of Christmas’ past flood my mind the closer it gets to December 25th. The house filled with music, the smell of freshly baked bread and cookies. Sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies, chocolate chip cookies, cookies with sparkles, and those without filling the air with an aroma that begged us all to steal a bit of batter if nothing else was available.

The freshly cut tree stood in the corner awaiting its lights and decorations. Dad would always do the lights; he’d never have allowed anyone else that job and mom would sit and watch us hang the ornaments upon it. She’d point out each bare spot in need of an ornament, and one of us would rush to fill that lonely place.

I don’t remember much about dinners when I was very young; my thoughts were all on what was in the packages and if Santa would bring…
