It was a reoccurring theme around the Quithai royal court this night. Lauralei had overheard the not so subtle whispers several times as she would pass bundles of courtiers. She did her best to hide her smile and look demur, casting her eyes down or moving away to a new corner.
She wanted to spin across the floor in the arms of some new acquaintance, however her public mourning was far from over. Decorum dictated that she not dance, sing, or partake of intoxicating substances for a minimum of three months. It was her Terme du Sorwen.

What inspired the story, The Greenlee Project? I was asked that recently, authors are asked that question frequently about their work. Since this book is important to me, personally, and I believe in the topic, I thought I’d share in detail my inspiration for the book.
Writing this piece took me to a dark place, as a writer, and at times as a person. I became more of a recluse than I appear to be. Typical for writers; but I’m not a recluse. As an author and a publisher, I truly am busy. Why was this piece so hard to write? Moreover, what inspired it?

SUMMARY: In the story, Wilhemena Brooks’ cousin, Bud Dunphry come to live with her family. Wil, as she likes to be called, finds her pink pencil sharpener is missing after Christmas. Wil knows Bud has it! Who else would have taken it? Bud doesn’t like girls! In fact, Bud doesn’t like anybody. Wil tries to ignore him but he pulls her friends hair, taken over games, and when Bud is in trouble he making his “you’re going to got it” face at her.
After a snowstorm closes school, Wil and her friends go sled riding. Bud shows up and starts a snowball fight which lands Wil in her room for the rest of the day for fighting.

My daughter and her boyfriend are Wyoming musicians, and they are traveling along the West Coast this week. Earlier in August they performed at an Oregon music festival, after which they texted a travel update. They had been trying to decide if they’d head north to Portland or south toward northern California before heading back home.
“Which direction will you go?” I texted back.
“We’ll know when we get on the road,” came the reply.
It occurred to me that fiction writing is kind of like that, at least for me. I may have an outline and a general idea which way to go, but I’m never entirely sure what will happen until I get on the road.
